The "America First" mentality is officially back. Personally, I see this as more posturing from Donald J. Trump and doubt it will come to fruition. However, a U.S.-Canada tariff war could impact the GTA real estate market. Higher material costs could push home prices up and slow construction. Economic uncertainty and job losses might reduce demand. Inflation or an economic slowdown could lead to either higher or lower interest rates, while a weaker Canadian dollar could attract foreign buyers. Ultimately, tariffs may result in higher costs, slower market activity, and more uncertainty. But in my view, this is just Trump showboating as he moves back into the White House.
